Recent information from a joint Finnish/American research team has discovered information on one of Simo Hayha's rifle. One of the rifles was a M/28-30. The serial number was #60974 built in the 1938-39 period. Does anyone have that serial number????? It is believed to possibly be in the Former Soviet Union, Finland or the U.S. . |

I have held with my own hands a Russian SVT-40 carbine in the Artillery and Sappers Museum in St. Petersburg only a few weeks ago (with photos to prove it), and heard with my own ears the reknowned Finn sniper Simo Hayha personally describe IN DETAIL the Swedish sniper rifle that he attempted to use in the Winter War (he didn't like it... made his head stick up too high... he preferred his M28 without scope instead).
Please don't try to tell me that I was dreaming all that... I know what I saw and I know what I heard (simultaneous translation courtesy of P.I., who has no agenda whatsoever)! |

But there are no pictures of the receiver.Usually there would be some marks or stamps to indicate it was a carbine. Could this have been one of the proto-types that usually end up in museums? In this paragraph Dennis you say you heard with your own ears him describe in detail. Do you understand Finnish? Maybe there was a misunderstanding of some type? Maybe during the translation? The Swede collectors I have contacted along with some Finns feel that there was a misunderstanding. This should have been cleared up by someone knowledgeable in this field at the time of translation. As far as P.I. having an agenda I would have to agree with you as I don't know who this is. Thank you for your post Dennis. |

As for the SVT-40 carbine being a prototype one of us specifically asked the curator of the museum this question and he stated ''no, this is as they were issued'', wherupon he was asked if any of these were used on the Finnish front and he stated that indeed they were, and that not very many had come back from there.
I did examine the receiver but saw no unexpected markings indicating it to be a carbine nor did I expect there to be any. The only unusual feature I saw was a hole drilled through the receiver-ring into the chamber to de-mill it (all firearms at the Artillery Museum were similarly drilled) and that it had a scope attached. As for what Mr. Hayha said at the luncheon at the Salpa-Line, though my understanding of Finnish is rudimentary (at best) I was fortunate to be seated beside a native Finn who whispered the translation of the words to me as they came out of Mr. Hayha's mouth. When Mr. Hayha would pause in his speaking Mr. Koivisto, seated clear across the room from me and directly across the table from Mr. Hayha, would stand and loudly paraphrase in English what was said. Mr. Koivisto did not include as much minute detail as the simultaneous translator did, but he was trying to use as few words as possible so that Mr. Hayha could continue speaking without delay (he was ''on a roll'' and seemed to be in an unusually ''chatty'' mood). In every case what Mr. Koivisto loudly stated matched what I had heard earlier from the simultaneous translation, and he added absolutely nothing that Mr. Hayha did not say first. In any case there were about five or six other Finns that spoke English at that luncheon (including several that were not with our group), and had Mr. Koivisto failed to translate what was said properly (or added anything that was not said) he would have been corrected immediately. This did not happen. I saw a few fellas with camcorders filming Mr. Hayha's speech, so no doubt there is video evidence of what he said. He spoke about this Swedish mauser for about three minutes, almost nonstop, describing the scope and complaining about the action (he didn't like the magazine-follower interrupting the bolt when the mag was empty, for instance) and was very adamant about having used one, especially when he was told by Mr. Koivisto that some folks in the U.S. did not believe it. I got no dog in this hunt, and if I was not certain about these things I would not have answered this post... you can continue to believe what you want to believe but I know what I saw and heard, and have at least 25 others that were also present in both instances who can back up everything I have stated here. There was no misunderstanding whatsoever. |

Gentlemen,
You have to understand that Mr. Hayha is 95 years of age. Winter war was over 60 years ago and lasted only three months. After the war, in addition to his work as farmer Mr. Hayha hunted a lot, almost professionally. Even one of our presidents used to hunt moose with him. No doupt he has used several of his rifles for hunting, too - a scoped swede is quite a good a long distance bird rifle. For moose it's not as good as a m/28-30 for instance. An old Finnish wartime book (1942: Antti J. Rantamaa: "Parlamentin palkeilta Kollaanjoen kaltahille" tells that he used his m/28-30, Suomi submachine gun and Lahti-Saloranta light machine gun for his counted kills. What's the idea to use a foreign rifle in the heavy front battles where you could not even get the ammo for it... Please - be honest... There is a well known picture taken just after colonel A.J. Svensson gave Hayha a rifle and certificate on 17th of February. Hayha's commander, the colonel is holding Hayha's famous m/28-30 and Hayha stands with the certificate and the price rifle. The rifle is definetly a Finnish m/28-30, too, in this picture. He may have got an other rifle, too. Bosun |

It's good to hear this from a Finn. Here at MNOTW we always believed it was a 28/30 serial number range and not a m/28 as stated by some other so called experts!

Look at this posting from the famous Gunboards listed below. I find it amazing how much this little person embellishes everything he does or has done. I guess
when you have done nothing in your life, except sit behind a key board, copy everyone else's material and call it empirical research, then take advertising
money for it, you feel great. When you question or research some of that stuff that goes on or what he says you'll find that all of what he says has some
truth, but a lot of embellishing to it, to comb the big man with the big ego. Watch how he compliments certain things, but at the same time embellishes
himself.
As far as the bottle of Crown Royal goes maybe they should have asked his nurse if the 95 yr old man was a diabetic? But then again they drug their drunken buddy Randy along that had chemical dependency problems anyway, so it's no surprise that they gave the old man the alcohol. I wonder what those two owners/directors did to help Randy with his chemical dependency problems. It's a shame they didn't do anything about that. Also if you notice where and how he posts you will find a pattern; everywhere and every time someone else posts something he has something better or he has one too. As one poster pointed out to me, "always one up on everyone and be the expert". Instead of learning, he must always be the one in charge and the teacher. . The "no one is better than me" syndrome. He must always be the authority on the subject matter of Mosins when in fact he and his partner must rely on other peoples written works.... then take credit for that work He's always advertising the greatness of his site and himself. Maybe someday he will grow up and find that greatness is not what you put on the Internet but what you have done with your life, in your community and with your country. He reminds me of the movie "The Wizard of Oz", where the little dog (with 6 posts) is pulling the curtain away showing the real Oz, which is a little person behind a curtain pulling and manipulating all kinds of things. I am embarrassed for him and feel a bit of pity for him. Posted by tuco It is funny how our meeting him seems to have created some anger in others. When we first met him some nutcase came on the board and blasted us stating we did not really meet with Mr. Hayha - that we were making it all up. Oh well….. I guess he just did not like the fact Mr. Hayha took the time to meet with a bunch of crazy North American collectors. I have also noticed that since the second meeting a few other people seem to want to attack us. It is very odd to me and I am not sure as to why this would upset people. Mr. Hayha was kind enough to meet with us and tell us of his life. He also enjoyed this as I could really tell in the second meeting that he had a blast seeing us again. I was at his table and he asked me through a translator how many in the group there had seen him last time. I told him it was about 30% or so and that really seemed to please him. When I did the articles on the site these were done to share what he told us as I assumed it would be of interest. I uploaded a video of the second meeting to YouTube and it has gotten over 17,500 views. Again that was done to share a bit of history with others and I am just shocked at the reaction seen by some. I can only assume these people are either jealous that they did not get the chance to meet the man or they have some other personal issues. I even read the other day some joker attacking us for giving Simo a bottle of Crown Royal as a gift…….. It was a gift that he himself asked for so how that is a problem is beyond me. Oh well… Such is life I guess as there is always someone out there in need of a lobotomy. After he died his family gave me a photo taken at his last birthday party, stating they wanted me to have this. I have never posted the photo and I am not sure if I ever will, as the photo was really a personal gift more than anything else. Maybe I will one day as in some regards I would love to share it. He was just a nice guy that told me all he did was "his duty". When he passed Finland and the world lost a hero. As my good friend Wayne Fox told me - meeting Simo was like taking part in history. It gives me chills to this day.

Is there even any pics of this so-called meeting? I could say that I gave Kalashnikov a bottle of Stoli and he endowed me with all knowledge of all things AK,
but it wouldn't make it so. Considering the vast descrepencies in this whole debate, I would hate to think that these esteemed "eggspurts" would
resort to name-dropping and lying in order to back their "factual" opinions/statements/fabrications. I know that their lackeys like to subscribe to
those methods, but I'd hate to think that the ringleaders would do the same BS. Wouldn't surprise me though. Considering how quick they are to
discredit photographic proof, legitimate businesses, and real-life professional experience, I can't figure out how these "eggspurts" can't
seem to provide any solid proof of anything themselves. Where I'm from we call people like that "blowhards", "wannabes", or
"hypocrites", but surely these "eggspurts" aren't lying to us are they?
BTW, stumbled across two more rotten plated MN bolts at another local gunsmith shop today. He said he runs into MN bolts with the cupro-plate and hardplate wearing off quite frequently as well. Considering that he has even more years of experience on this stuff as I do, I find it odd that supposed "eggspurts" on the MN felt called upon to call me a liar on the matter. I find it really interesting also that most internet know-it-alls/eggspurts are also the most anonymous people on the Net |

What is embarrassing in this whole deal is having Finn bears photo mixed in with this honorable old man. When you say Finn bear in Finland everyone knows it as
well as the Police. They should be ashamed of themselves associating a drunken vagabond like that with such a great man. But then again they didn't care
about the old guy anyway. Just their fame associated with his picture.
They must have no shame over there. They wonder why less people are posting over there, except the good ole boys and the newbies.
